Cool Spore-Inspired Flash Games

There are some cool new Flash games inspired by Spore. First, a MFA thesis project called Flowing is nice. I also like this one, but by far the best Spore-like Flash game is this wonderful nameless gem I found on this forum thread. Check it out!

It’s a great way to kill some time and get your head in the game simultaneously while we all anxiously await the March 3rd Spore release.

Spore for Mac!

Will Wright @ Macworld: “We couldn’t be happier to bring Spore to the Mac at the same time as the PC version. Spore is a highly creative game and I look forward to seeing what the players come up with to fill the universe they design.”

As a MacBook Pro owner, I find this very sweet. Now I don’t need to worry about the Spore system requirements because I know I’m all set! I can’t wait to buy Spore for Mac!

EA Games conference call - Spore Release Date update?

A recent post on VideoGamesBlogger.com hints at a significant delay in the Spore release date by not including Spore in their planning for this fiscal year which ends in March 2008.

Does this really mean Spore won’t be released until at least April ‘08? If so, it’s more likely to be released just in time for the holiday shopping season which, if true, could mean another 15-16 months at least before we can play! Say it ain’t so, Wil!

Brian Eno - Spore will use procedural soundtrack

Brian Eno, the “father of ambient music,” has been tapped by Wil Wright to integrate Eno’s “Shuffler” procedural music generation technology into Spore, as the Wright’s developers have always wanted.

“The program (which accepts input based on the game’s parameters) can turn even a small combination of samples into a composition which will never repeat, no matter how long you will play the game.”

Sorry, no updates on the Spore release date.

Spore Vehicle Editor - Interview with EA’s Morgan Roarty

Spore Vehicle Editor Interview

Electronic Arts Senior Producer Morgan Roarty tells PC Gamer about Spore’s vehicle editor. Here’s a fascinating excerpt:

PCG: How do the choices you make in the vehicle editor impact gameplay?

MR: You choose whether to create an air vehicle, a land vehicle, or a water vehicle, and there are different palettes organized around that. If you’re making a land vehicle, you have palettes full of wheels and treads and cockpits. If you’re making an air vehicle, you’ve got propellers, zeppelin-type parts, and wings. For water vehicles, we have hulls and sails, propellers, that kind of stuff. You can mix and match, too—it’s fun to put cool, aerodynamic-looking wings on a land vehicle to make it look a little bit more sleek. Water vehicles are my favorite—it’s really fun to make your fleet and armada.

Also, though it’s not completely final yet, each vehicle gets stats: a speed rating, a defense rating, and a power rating. There’s a pretty classic balance: You know, you can have a quick vehicle that doesn’t have a lot of defenses for quick attacks, or the classic tank, which is slower but has a lot of defense. The power rating ties into the military side, but we also have cultural and diplomatic vehicles, and the power rating also ties into how well they work.

Will Wright on Colbert Report - Spore Release Date update!

Will Wright was interviewed by Stephen Colbert for the Colbert Report, and reveals that we may not be able to buy spore until the second half of 2007. :-( But at least the interview is both funny and brilliant, plus Stephen actually says the word “nerd-rection“.
