Spore Vehicle Editor Interview
Electronic Arts Senior Producer Morgan Roarty tells PC Gamer about Spore’s vehicle editor. Here’s a fascinating excerpt:
PCG: How do the choices you make in the vehicle editor impact gameplay?
MR: You choose whether to create an air vehicle, a land vehicle, or a water vehicle, and there are different palettes organized around that. If you’re making a land vehicle, you have palettes full of wheels and treads and cockpits. If you’re making an air vehicle, you’ve got propellers, zeppelin-type parts, and wings. For water vehicles, we have hulls and sails, propellers, that kind of stuff. You can mix and match, too—it’s fun to put cool, aerodynamic-looking wings on a land vehicle to make it look a little bit more sleek. Water vehicles are my favorite—it’s really fun to make your fleet and armada.
Also, though it’s not completely final yet, each vehicle gets stats: a speed rating, a defense rating, and a power rating. There’s a pretty classic balance: You know, you can have a quick vehicle that doesn’t have a lot of defenses for quick attacks, or the classic tank, which is slower but has a lot of defense. The power rating ties into the military side, but we also have cultural and diplomatic vehicles, and the power rating also ties into how well they work.
